Power Platon
Nel post della settimana scorsa avevo segnalato il video del backstage del fotografo Platon che ritraeva Snowen per Wired e vi avevo raccontato che avevo colto subito l’occasione per comprare il suo libro su amazon.co.uk al prezzo irrisorio di 13€.
Ordinato domenica pomeriggio, arrivato giovedì mattina…. Adoro comprare libri fotografici, Adoro Amazon, adoro il commercio elettronico, Amazon riesce a battere anche l’inefficienza della logistica italiana.
Ma torniamo al libro. Il progetto è stato realizzato per la maggior parte nel settembre 2009, in occasione di una riunione delle Nazioni Unite a New York e Platon, che collaborava con il giornale The New Yorker, aveva allestito per l’occasione uno studio fotografico proprio nel palazzo dove si teneva l’’Assemblea Generale. Nel corso di cinque giorni frenetici, ha fatto di tutto per coinvolgere i leader più potenti del mondo per una sessione di ritratto, che per alcuni ha avuto addirittura una durata di circa 8 secondi.
Ci sono eroi, tiranni, dittatori e rivoluzionari: Andry Rajoelina, che ha preso il controllo del Madagascar in un colpo di stato militare del 2009, sfoggia un sorriso fanciullesco, l’ex premier Silvio Berlusconi sorride in modo sornione, il presidente sudcoreano Lee Myung-Bak è mirabilmente pettinato, Vladimir Putin è bloccato in una posa fiera con lo sguardo funesto che ci ricorda il suo passato da tenente colonnello del KGB, Robert Mugabe dello Zimbabwe, dall’aspetto vigoroso, nonostante i suoi 87 anni, e lo sguardo agghiacciante.
I ritratti che preferisco sono quelli in primissimo piano ed in bianco e nero, dove il fotografo riesce a violare la bolla di ’intimità di questi uomini potenti, mettendoli a nudo e creando uno stretto contatto con il lettore che rimane colpito nell’osservare la grande varietà di dettagli del ritratto.
La copertina è rigida, il formato è il classico A4 e le stampe ben fatte, per quello che l’ho pagato, ne vale davvero la pena.

The project of POWER PLATON was carried out for the most part in September 2009, during a meeting of the United Nations in New York and Platon, who collaborated with the newspaper The New Yorker, had set up for the occasion, a photo studio right in the building where he was holding the ” General Assembly. During five hectic days, he did everything to involve the most powerful leaders in the world for a portrait session, some no more than the duration of 8 seconds.
There are heroes, tyrants, dictators and revolutionaries: Andry Rajoelina, who took control of Madagascar in a military coup in 2009, show a boyish smile, the ex premier Silvio Berlusconi smiles so sly, South Korean President Lee Myung -Bak is admirably combed, Vladimir Putin is locked in a proud pose with baleful gaze that reminds us of his past as a KGB lieutenant colonel, Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, vigorous looking, despite his 87 years, and the look chilling .
I prefer the close-up portraits in black and white, where the photographer breaks the bubble intimacy of these powerful men, where he’s putting them bare and creating a close contact with the reader who is struck in observing the great variety of details of the portrait.
The cover is rigid, the format is the classic A4 and prints well done, for what I paid, it is really worth.
